Nelson in Conflict with a Spanish Launch, July 1797

image details

Description:
An incident during Rear-Admiral Nelson's command of the inshore squadron blockading the Spanish fleet in Cadiz, after the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797. After provoking a Spanish attack on one of his own vessels, Nelson went to its rescue in several armed boats including his barge, with his coxswain John Sykes and Captain Thomas Fremantle of the frigate 'Seahorse'. All three are seen here fighting shoulder to shoulder against the larger Spanish launch which attacked them.
